>  < =  the greater than, less than signs, equal to signs.

The open part or "open mouth"  eats the bigger number.

e.g.  458 < 980

1.  Look to see what number has more digits.  The number with more digits is bigger.

e.g.  223,569 > 99,245

2.  If the number has the same number of digits, compare the digits starting at the left.  If the digits are equal move to the next digit. The greater digit is the greater number

e.g.  2,345,441 < 2,355,441        

2,355,441 is the bigger number
