Teaching Philosophy

My biggest hope is that I instill a life-long love of learning and an environment where all children feel valued, successful, loved and challenged.

About Me

My name is Betsy May and I am a 1st grade teacher. I have been at Burroughs for 18 years, nine of which were teaching kindergarten in our former bilingual program. I am originally from Grinnell, IA. I received my B.A. in Bilingual Elementary Ed from the University of Iowa and my graduate work at UW-Madison and Hamline. I have been teaching for 33 years in four different states.  I have a bilingual household as well! My husband is from Guatemala, so we speak Spanish in our house. He is also a teacher in Bloomington Public Schools. We also run a Spanish language school in Guatemala, and spend part of our summers there.  We have two daughters. Maya is 28 and lives in Washington D.C. and Quena (pronounced Kay-na) is 27 and lives in Seattle, WA. I love to travel and have co-guided seven hiking trips in Spain during the summer. In my free time, I enjoy reading, yoga and biking and walking the lake (when I don't have my foot in a boot!).
